Temple Solel 44th Anniversary Casino Night

The Fund Raising Committee is seeking additional sponsors for the the Casino Night and Silent Auction on Saturday, April 5.  We have set a goal of raising at least $2,000 for sponsors and prizes to cover the costs of the games and professional croupiers. With over 2 1/2 months before the event, we are pleased to tell you that we are over half way to our goal.  So, why not become a sponsor and help us exceed our goal?

If you have not yet become a sponsor because for one reason or another you do not want to spend $100, here is a a way to become a sponsor - get together with one or more members of Temple Solel, friends, neighbors and relatives to be one.  We have received several sponsorships from such "groups." This is an easy and less "expensive" way to sponsor a table. 

And if you would like to reserve your place at the Casino Night and Silent Auction, fill out the form in Temple Topics and return it to the Temple no later than March 21.  I look forward to seeing you at the Casino Night.

Paper Recycling Now at Temple Solel
The next MAJOR step forward in our congregational recycling program has arrived! Next to the old trash dumpster out back, you will see a bright shiny yellow and blue Paper Recycling Dumpster – provided by our partners at Abitibi.
Abitibi will PAY US to recycle paper with them! You read that correctly! They will pay the Temple, by the ton, for what we recycle with them. And they will take any and all recyclable paper – but nothing else, including cardboard. All at no charge to us!
So, I can hear you thinking – what is the catch? There has to be a catch! Well, there is, but it is a small one! Within the first 90 days, we need to fill our dumpster TWICE for them to pick up. Once we do that, we are full partners….
So, here is what we need from all of you – BRING US YOUR PAPER TO RECYCLE!!!!! Even if you have curbside paper recycling, as most of us do – for the next couple of months, if we all bring our recyclable paper – newspapers, magazines and catalogs, school and office paper, and mail – we should have no probleming making the weight.
And remember – shred materials with personal and identity information before dumping!

   Fisher House Update


Dear Members of Temple Solel:

 
 
The director of Fisher House, the facility on the grounds of Andrews Air Force Base that helps wounded service men and women who have returned from Iraq and Afghanistan, once again could use our help.
 
Fisher House is in need of several types of new clothing items to help these wounded members of our armed forces stay physically warmer during their stay in the base hospital, where the temperature tends to be set on the cold side.

Especially needed are:

--Knit hats, watch caps, or other warm headgear

--Knit or insulated gloves (gloves with fingers, not weightlifting gloves)

--Knit, wool, acrylic, or other warm scarves

--Sweatpants

--Sweatshirts

Donations of these clothing items can be placed in the Fisher House box in the lobby of the temple. If you would prefer to donate money for the temple's Social Action Committee to purchase the items, you can leave a check in an envelope inside the Social Action Committee's box in the temple office (please mark it "For Fisher House").

Many department and discount stores are already starting to mark down their winter merchandise now that the holiday season is over, so now is a good time to buy these items and help keep a soldier warmer and more comfortable during recuperation.

Note: You may have seen some of the recent news reports on poorly run veterans and military charitable organizations, where only a small percentage of donations collected are reaching the military personnel the organizations are supposed to be helping. However, the news reports also named a handful of organizations that are well run and effective -- we were happy to see that Fisher House is on that list.

THE COLOR PURPLE is a hot ticket in New York and across America.  Temple Solel has reserved 80 tickets as part of our fund raising efforts.  The Hippodrome has not yet released any individual tickets for sale.  As we have done before, we will also be offering bus service from and to the Hippodrome.  We will set the price for the bus when we know how people will be on it.
